Default What is this hose for?

I've included 2 images outlining the hose in question. It goes in somewhere under the carburetor but is not connected anywhere on the other end. Car runs fine as is. I'm curious what this is for.

It could be for the transmission controlled spark (TCS) or the EGR valve. Not having any idea what year car we're talking about (and it ain't in your profile) makes it difficult to say.

The year of the car would help. Normally with a stock Q-Jet that would be the ported spout pulling vacuum to the EGR valve through the thermal vacuum switch (TVS). On a Holley as shown I do not know.

If that hose is not connected to anything you have a serious vacuum leak.

Sorry for lack of details. I will update my profile in a minute.

The car is a 1980 with a 305.

Until you identify the purpose for that hose...and determine whether you need it or not...either plug the other end or remove the hose and cap the carb fitting.

well my holley is the same but I capped it because its a vac hose option holley gives you but on my set up I didn't need it open nor hooked up to anything so I put a cap on it and now the car is more responsive

Looks like I will be capping the carb fitting then.

In an effort to learn more, what is involved with a 'vacuum leak'? What does that mean exactly?

A vacuum leak is unmetered air (air not going through the carburetor metering to be mixed with fuel) going into the intake system.
