Default Engine - Mod Recommendations

Hey Guys,
This summer I plan to mod my 350 L48. Its not the original engine and has about 8,000 miles (at the most). I currently have an Edelbrock Performer Intake and 600cfm carb, K&N filter, and true dual exhaust. I plan to put Dynomax headers on early summer. I want to put an additional $1200 - $1500 into it. Most of the work will be done by me. So what would you do (looking for specific info) with that budget to get as much speed and power out of it as possible??

Kind of depends on what you have in the car now and where you want to wind up...
If you have good heads (check the casting and then check some ref books), port them with a good rebuild and save ~$400 over new heads.
Decide what you want the engine to be before you start as all the work needs to be aligned to that goal.
Then a cam designed for your use, update the HEI (or replace depending if you're going for more than 6000 rpm).
I'd spend money for roller cam and rockers too..
There are thousands of ways to build a strong SBC and even more ways to screw it up with mismatched components.
Read a few build books and then talk to a GOOD machine shop that builds performance engines and tell them what you want to do.
 good luck; engine building is a lot of fun, nothing compares to saying, "I built it"

well you will have to ask yourself. Do i want a car that will run low 11's in the quarter, or do i want a car that can do 150 on the highway all day long? I would do the usual 1. bigger cam 2. headers 3. pistons and heads 4. ignition Those right their will give you atleast 100hp more!

Talk to Comp Cams. Tell then what you want. And what you plan to do. You'll find that's the easier road to walk down. The 1st thing I did was talk to Comp Cams.

Crane or Crower aslo have good cams.

Just bringing it back to the front!! I know there are many ways to approach this, I was just asking for opinions, if it was you.. what parts would you pick!! I'd rather have acceleration than a lot of top speed.

I would start with a set of good heads (Afr 190's or the new Edelbrock e tec), with a small combustion chamber to bump up your compression, more aggresive cam (xe268), and headers. That will spend all your money and give you plenty of performance. You could re-use your carb and intake and upgrade them at a later date.
