Default Distributor Installation

I’m finally getting around to installing a new distributor in my 71 LS5. The distributor is a stock unit with a Pertronix Ignitor III electronic ignition modular that I have substituted for the breaker point set. I know to mark the orientation of the distributor and the rotor prior to removal. However, does the drive gear need to be lubricated before installation? Any information and advice that will help in the removal, installation, and timing adjustment is greatly appreciated.

Marking it before removal is good. I like to put a strip of duct tape across the rotor and down to the casting on both sides [to keep it oriented as a unit] when I remove it. That allows me to get a good estimate of how much the dizzy wants to 'twist' as I remove it (because of the helical drive gear). I do the same before installing it, then add that same amount of twist before dropping it in. It usually slips right in.

(That makes 4,732 uses for duct tape...)
