That's the cable that came with the car. May be different styles out there. Been a while since I've messed with these "older" cars. Over the years someone may have changed it and/or the tranny.
The play in the end is supposed to be there. If not it wouldn't shift, or shift way to late. I have it adjusted so it kicks down about the same time the secondaries open up. Took a few days to find the right spot for me. Now that it works, it's kinda scary when it downshifts and the rear starts to let loose, then the rears let out a nice squeel when it upshifts again.
