Been working on the A/C in my '72 while I have the dash apart and I'm stumped on a couple of points. # 1 - when I move the A/C control wheel to MAX A/C the vacuum moves the door open on the passenger's side OK to recirculate the air but I thought that the fan speed was supposed to go to max. Looked for the resistor or relay or whatever that's supposed to be in the engine compartment but can't locate it. So, is the fan supposed to go to max ? Anybody got a picture of where the resistor / relay is ?
# 2 - the boot in the first picture is loose from the blower cover (second picture). I've looked through my AIM and the vendors parts books and can not find it. What is it and what does it do ? (see my response below)
Thanks in advance for the help.

Reason: Pictures do not show up
My '72 vette manual shows the resistor bank located on the heater case just to the passenger side of center inside under the dash. If your blower speed goes from low to high with the switch then the resistor bank is ok.The manual doesn't get into much theory of operation, so that's about the best I can do for you. The blower switch is located at the bottom of the console.
Figured out # 2. It's the AC Blower Motor Cooling Tube (3014788). Mounts between AC/heater blower motor and evaporator case. Cools motor when AC running. Also, the part is no longer available.
The little brown thing next to the tube with the 2 quick connects on it is the blower resistor. It is mounted in the plenum so air blows on it as it is a wire resistor, and get hotter than a pistol.

When you go to Max AC it simply moves the diverter doors to recirculate the air within the cabin. You should still retain fan speed control with the fan switch.
I'm not familiar with the 72 so I can't speak to it but on newer models including my 77 there is a high speed relay mounted on the fire wall that sends battery voltage around the resister bank to the blower motor.
