Default 1978 Clutch Question

I'm a new user and I've searched around on here quite a bit, but haven't found EXACTLY what I'm looking for. My question is this: what should the travel of the clutch pedal be (in a stock vehicle) before it engages? My family that is holding onto my car for me (I'll finally be able to see her in December, after I get out of Durkadurkastan) tells me that at about halfway down they feel it engage, and the car feels like it wants to take off when the clutch is barely released. I've asked some friends, and they tell me different things. Some say that it's supposed to be that way, and others say it's not. And I cannot find the answer anywhere. Thank you in advance!

On a car with mechanical linkage which is stock on a C3 I like to have a little freeplay at the top. As for the release this is what I setup. I like to have it start engaging about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the floor. This usually gives me about an inch of travel up top so while pushing it in it starts to conatct the throwout bearing about in inch or so down. The more critical point is where it starts to contact and get the car moving. Every clutch will be a little different and depending on wear yours might need some adjustment.
