i am removing the engine on my 69 to rebuild it. does anyone know if it is neccessary to remove the trans or will the engine come out with the trans in place?thanks.
Do you want to remove trannie with the engine? If so you will need to remove the core support and have a leveler so you can tilt the engine enough to get it up and out. If you don't need to remove trannie, unbolt it (and drive shaft) and slide it back in the tunnel enough to clear the bell. Then pull the engine.
no,don't want to pull trans.will the motor come out with the trans in place?if i lift the front of the motor and slide it foward wil the shaft come out?
If you don't want to pull the trans, do as Duke said. Like he said as well, the trans will come out easily with the engine as long as you have a load leveler with your hoist and you remove the radiator and support. I also found with pulling the engine on my 69 I had to go in from the side and not the front. Also, if what you are asking is will the input shaft come out by moving the engine forward instead of pulling the tranny back, I would say not the way to do it.

When I tried to unbolt my M21 from the bellhousing, I took half my knuckle off. To pull the tranny back, you need to remove the driveshaft and the shifter/bracket, support the rear of the engine, then unbolt and remove the rear tranny mount. All that is left is to rotate the tranny 90 degrees and take it out of the whole. Why not just pull it with the engine? Believe me, you are going to want to assemble them as a unit before re-installing in the car...unless you feel really good about sliding that tranny shaft into the clutch and throw out bearing, all while laying under the car. Not much room to work under there and if you knock the bearing out of the clutch fingers or dislodge the clutch fork...fun and games. With an automatic, I would consider leaving it in the car.
Ive head the engine and tranny out of my 78 several times and even with the longer Tremec TKO I never once fiddled with the core support - radiator yes, core support - leave it alone it doesnt have to be removed.
A load leveller which can be rented from Autozone or Kragen makes things much much easier. It can be done with much more effort if you dont have one, but after using a leveller I wont ever go back.
I fyou decide to pull the engine and tranny together, disconnect the driveshaft at the slip yoke at the back of the trans, leave the slip yoke in, this way the tranny wont dump lube all over the ground when you tip it during removal.
Ive done it both ways, with and without tranny, and I wont ever pull the engine alone again. mating the tranny to the engine is so much easier out of the car than under the car that its worth it in my opinion

It's a heckuva lot quicker and easier pulling the engine & trans together as a unit, and it makes it much easier to mate the tranny to the engine with the two out of the car. I've never used a load leveler - just a chain with a locking bolt in it, and the whole thing comes out with no problem.
