Hey don't worry about it, any new information is useful to me. You can use this thread if you want to, I don't care at all.

I really appreciate the input.

sigforty: I agree about the bug eye filter. They are dangerous. I was using it to hold my pieces of plumbers putty to check clearance.

Solid LT1: I will keep the intake in mind. As crazy as it sounds, I'm interested in lower end for this car and the Brodix website talks about high rpm HP for your intake. I have a pretty spunky 71 vert 4 speed with 3.70s for the "man" in me. This car will be more for longer trips with an automatic, Vintage Air etc.

Terry82: The spring is fine. What you see in the pic is the black paint peeling due to the spring flex. I am going to install the inner spring also.

With that said here are some additional pics of my hood clearance. I can't find any name or numbers on the heads or manifold.
Questions:
1. Is there a lower rise manifold available?
2. Can you tell from the pics what kind of heads or manifold?
Thanks,
Mike

ragtopp00:

Those are definitely Vortec heads, you can tell by the tooth pattern on the front of the heads. I'm not sure about the intake, I dont think it is an edelbrock though, it doesnt have any of their logos. We have Vortec heads and Edelbrock Vortec intake on my school's auto club.

Thanks for the info. Will.
Now that I know they're Vortec I have to find the lowest rise manifold out there. The one I have on it is about 3 3/4 from the lowest point (valley) to the carb mounting surface. I'm also looking for a LT1/big block hood for more clearance.
Mike

I'm going to start another thread on this.

No problem, let me know if you make another thread. Is your car Steel Cities Gray by any chance? It looks like it in your avatar. I love that color, I'm painting my '74 SCG when I do the paint/body.

Will,
Thanks for the SCG compliment. That's my 71. I love the color! The one with the Vortec is my 72. I think I got the air filter clearance issue figured out. Good luck with your 74
Cheers!

FYI. All RPM manifolds, AirGap or not are the same height. Just checked the Edelbrock catalog. If an RPM fits, an RPM airgap will fit.

You need the correct base drop ( some are too low and hit things ) in combination with the correct filter height to get them to fit.

I wouldn't go out and just buy one, I would try a shop that had a variety of drop bases and filters that you could try. They ( most ) will let you do it because they know you are going to buy the one that fits

Ragtop00, I too was going to warn you about that air cleaner. They seem to be a fire hazard. To the OP's question, I have no first hand experience, but have read considerably on the subject because I've considered the same intake, and the consensus I've read is that a Performer RPM will fit with a drop base air cleaner, especially on later model C3.
