Default Question on intake manifolds

Hi everyone,
I am dropping a 383 stroker into my 1981 vette and have had people "caution" me that I need a low-rise intake manifold so my stock hood will close. I just saw in a magazine where a guy had a Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold (high-rise) on his 383 and the hood appeared to be stock. His car was an '82 but it appeared to be the same hood. Will a Performer RPM fit under my stock hood? I have never had anyone tell me yes or no, just cautioned me. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I've heard yes & no. When they came out with that manifold, everyone said they don't fit. Nowadays the consensus seems to be they are working fine. Go Figger .....

Isn't the issue with the earlier cars, where the non-LT1 small blocks had a very flat hood? (72 and earlier, I want to say...)

82 hoods are differant.they do have less room than the 80-81 because of the cross-fire air intake .it can be cut if needed.

don't think you going to make it. I have an '81 with a performer 2101, 600 holley, and a drop 2 1/2" aircleaner. have only 7/8" hood clearance. of course, every 'vette is a little different. good luck, Rich

How does your 383 run with the performer on it?

Default question on

I have the newer 2701 manifold with a 1405 carb , dropbase aircleaner with 3" element . The thing I did was make a flat aircleaner cover (1/4" plexiglass) , cut down the threaded rod slightly , and it just fits stock hood . Seems like the tires , some fit , some don't .

Usually all you need is a drop base air cleaner. If you are using stock air intake then no it won't fit.

I have an Edelbrock performer (Normal) with a Jegs drop base air cleaner 14 x 3 inch. It clears the hood fine on my '74. It should work if it is a normal performer rpm, but probably not if it is an air gap model.

...fit under my 74' hood and with a 'stock' 71' air cleaner assembly I have at least 1+" of extra clearance. Notice that the 2.5" chunks of PlayDoh are not touched when the hood is clamped closed. That ----- is huge. Unbelievable!

BTW: my engine compartment is much nicer now!

Default Vortec hood clearance

Here's my experience with the hood clearance Vortec question. I hope it helps and maybe someone can chim in and help me also. Thanks These are pics of my 72. Matching numbers block with what I believe are Vortec heads. Even with the thin bug eye air filter it still rubs the stock hood. I'm getting it ready for paint and am concerned that I will have paint issues in the future. Does anybody know if there is a lower intake for the Vortec?
Thanks again
Mike

If you do not have a fire extinguisher in the car I would suggest getting one. Those bug eye air cleaners are notorious for catching fire if the car backfires thru the carb.

I'll sell you a nice clean brodix HVH1016 intake if your motor has 1204 Felpro or bigger ports on it. $150 shipped to any of the 48 states. Google this intake it works as well as the air-gap and is about 1.25" lower.

Hey motorhead,
I was hoping you would offer your 2 cents because it seems you have been through your car enough times to assemble it in your sleep. I would get a drop base air cleaner so I am glad to hear you think it will work with that combination. I have been reluctant to order one because I want the benefits of the RPM but also want my hood to close thanks
