Side Yokes Loose
Rear end was working fine. Not slipping or chattering. I pulled rear end to clean it up while changing trailing arm bushings. The rear end does make a clunking noise when shifting between forward and reverse. The bushings at the front of the rear end were shot.
Question: will shimming the clutch pack fix the yoke gaps on both sides. Seems like shimming the clutch pack would only correct or help the gap for the yoke on the passenger side.
Roger
1) Remove the carrier from the case.
2) Install one clutch pack and spider gear.
3) Install cross shaft with one spider on it.
4) Jam a thick screwdriver between crossdhaft and clutch spider gear.
5) Check play on cross shaft spider (wiggle).
Add clutch shims until the spider just barely has play. You're shooting for 0.001".
If the yoke still has excessive play after this it is a worn yoke. A new yoke was about 0.183" from the snap ring groove to the end. You can measure yours and see how much is gone.
Guess I'll order a new clutch pack and shims.
Considering rebuilding differential, new bearings and 3.36 gear ratio for the big block I am building. Any thoughts.
Thanks
Roger
