You are obviously not going with a NCRS car if you have a 396/402 in your 71 so a mini starter is lighter and less probelms. For the purist the stock is what they want. I have run a GM mini starter and now have an after market starter. Would not run anything else.
The only thing you have to worry about on the mini starters is the wiring. Are you still running points? The R terminal is not there on mini starters. The R is the resistor wire used to give 12 volts at startup to the points to give it a little boost. If you have converted to electronic you will be fine. You do not need the R wire.
There is a bunch out there. Powermaster, Tilton, GM performance, Bosch, CSR and even Summit has there own brand. I have a Power master 9100 under my bench that I took off a motor that I installed for someone. They had there own starter. I don't know how much compression or how hot your motor is but this is for something slightly warmer than stock. Here is the link if interested. It was installed on the motor but never used. Still in the box with its packaging.
Take your pick they are all lighter and smaller than stock.
Here is what is cranking the big block in my car - http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-5809-s...0-sdr0031.aspx
It is a GM type, gear reduction mini starter so replacement parts are available at your local auto parts store.
I have a 10:1 compression 454 in my car with the ignition timing locked at 38°, and the car cranks with absolutely no problems.
I have a Summit mini starter...nothing special, just their base model $135 starter. It starts my 10:1, 496" with 32* locked timing just fine....even in the middle of summer after sitting in traffic.
Mini starters are the only way to go. You can also get GM rebuild mini starters from Oreilys/Auto Zone for a mid 90s 454 1 ton truck. My dad has one of these on his 454 and it has been fine for many years.
I have a 12.5:1 compression BB w/MSD ignnition in my Nova and have been using the same Tilton mini-starter for a long time now with no problems (hot or cold). Good Luck.
I am using the standard Oreillys rebuild OEM replacement for my BB. Turns a tad slower with the BB, but no problems so far. Has a lifetime warranty for any problems/defects.
