I was wondering how much it should cost to have rings and bearing installed in my engine. The engine will be out of the car with the heads, exhaust manifolds, intake, waterpump, timing chain, cam, fuel pump and oil pan removed and of course all accessories removed also. I will be installing a new cam, gear drive, heads, intake, carb., fuel pump, dist., headers, water pump and other accessories once the ring and bearing are installed. Would the stock pistons be o.k. for a mild performance build.
I wouldn't put new bearings in unless I turned the crank and reconditioned the rods. Also wouldn't put new rings in without a bore and hone of the cylinders.
After all that, it would practically be a rebuild. While it's that far apart I'd replace the cam bearings.
just had mine done 79 350, cleaned, bored .030 over (355), keith black flattop pistons, rebuilt vortec rods, new cam bearings. deck the block .010", polished crank. i reassembled everything else. $680. just for the short block.
It sounds like you are pretty much planning on a rebuild. Once you tear the engine down its best to carry the block to a place that can vat it out and from there they will mike the cylinders to see if you can get by keeping the engine standard bore and honing the glaze off of your cylinder walls. They will also put new cam bearings into your block. That probably will cost you about $150 dollars. You from there can install your own rings on the pistons and rent a ring compressor and install them your self. The rods and main bearings are also easy to install your self once the machine shop has checked out the crank journals
Hey speedreed8 ..........Was the $680.00 for parts and labor. That sounds like a bargain compared to what I've spent on my parts so far. What cu. in. would 60 over give me and what are the pro and cons for going 60 over instead of 30 over.
Bore and torque plate hone $26 per hole, Crank turn $100. Cam bearings and plugs with threading oil journals $25, Recon rods $10 per rod, thermo clean and shot peen block $39, Deck if needed $75, Balance parts and crank $170.
The heads depends on what they need.
That looks like about 600 labor and rotating assemblies from summit are$221 to about $350 for 4.30 pistons, rings, bearingsgaskets and freeze plugs. So thats about $900 to $1000 for parts and labor. Sound about right
If I only lived in Texas I would jump on the $680 deal. Thats a bargain. I'll see what I can find here in Virginia for near that price now that I have a basis to go by. Thanks for the info
Keep in mind that rebuilding is good, providing that the machine shops are doing whats best for the customer. Sometimes they'll tell you that..."well we can't reuse this, or that..." And in the end you end up paying more than if you got a summit short block(355 .030) ASSEMBLED. Just my thoughts on it. Talk to these guys here, maybe someones in the area that can recommend you someone?

also, most experienced folk'll tell you a gear drive is a poor choice for all street sbc/BBC except those rare crazy radical huge solid roller cam examples.

sbc or BBC ... cast or hyper or forged ... no matter ... there are VERY few shelf-stock pistons available in +0.050" oversize. plenty of std,+20,+30,+40,+60 shelf stock (regular series production, Non-custom order).
