Took the Vette out today for a joy ride, I've noticed that when I am going through the gears the car seems to sputter a lot at higher rpm's. I originally thought it might be the timing, but in neutral I can rev the hell out of it and no sputter. I am no wrench head and don't have a lot of mechanical skills, but I think it may be the tranny. This has been gradual, but today it seemed a lot worse than before. I hope sputter is the right word for it, it seems to loose power and putt putt putt. Hopefully you all know what I mean. Thanks for the help!
Yeah. Not likely trans. problem. I would be checking ignition as terry said. Has car had a major tune up lately? When engine is under load or cruising under light load, then trying to accelerate, tuneup/timing can cause those problems. mike...
I'd think about points and plugs before I go get spooled up on just about anything else, from your description in the original post, it sounds like the problem is ignition.
Back in the late 60s, when I worked in service garages, we always looked at points and plugs first, then caps, rotors and wires, then fuel. Of course, the cars were a helluva lot newer then.
My car is sputtering or cutting out in the upper rpm range as well, but no backfiring or popping like with intermittent plug firing. Thought I had the ignition all worked out, maybe not. Really hate to get into fuel issues...original tank, inlet sock, fuel lines...but new hoses, pump, filter and carb. Might as well start with fuel pressure and suction tests...such a pain to crack open the fuel system and start messing around.
