If I'm not mistaken I believe those metal tabs are there to hold the heat sheilds that protect the engine compartment side of the floorboards. Those shields are absent on my buddies '68 427 400 h.p. and man do your feet get hot!

Here is a picture of my '69. The pointed tabs are riveted to the floor boards in many locations, including the tunnel, to hold the foil covered insulation in place. The flat tabs on the cross member and floor are used to mount the metal shields and white plastic toe boards in the lower firewall area.

Apparently there is a upper and lower for '68s & '69s

http://www.zip-corvette.com/ProductD...GR-SR&CTitle=&

If you'll notice the next link is for a "late" '69.

This link is for an "early" '69.

Late '69 w/AC:

You might to research these for yourself as I could have made some mistakes. I hadn't ever seen any "underbody" heat sheilds on my '72 and it turns out there aren't any (I think).

Hi,
I believe that by model year 70 just the upper shields were being used although the early (several thousand) 454 cars still had both upper and lower shields.
As far as I know the upper shields continued at least through model year 72.
The finish on them is a gray phosphate plating similar to the plating on the hood latches.
Regards,
Alan

Hi mb64,
I'd think that if your car ever had shields you see traces of the rivets or rivet holes that were used to install the lower bracket and/or the rivets or holes used to install the 2 upper stud plates.
I'm curious what you might find.
Regards,
Alan

As many times as I've been under my car I've never noticed any evidence of the lower heat shields. The firewall "splash" shields are in place and in very good condition and I don't remember them showing signs of any attaching hardware. Heck, I didn't even know there was a such thing as a lower heat shield until I saw them in the picture above. I guess since my car is a '72 I never noticed them in the AIM nor did I ever notice needing them after browsing through my many parts cataloges. If the temp in the dog-house (garage) gets above freezing perhaps I'll go out and take a look. If anything looks amiss I'll post it.

Thanks,
Gene

My '73 has the upper "splash shields". Wonder why they dropped the heat shield underneath? Bean counters maybe?

I don't know why the shields were dropped but it wouldn't be a bad mod. Anything to cool off the floor boards is a good thing.

Alan, I am curious on that note - my early (Feb) BB has no evidence of lower heat shields - any idea when that mod occurred? I'm fairly sure that it never had the lower ones but I plan on checking for any mounting points when I am under there this winter....

I have a question for FasterRat....
in this pic you have the foil looking sheilding....

I heard only the stock N14 cars would have that? Do you know if that is true ?

-ALF out..

The foil covered insulation you see is both under the floor boards and toe boards, as well as the transmission tunnel. It comes in three pieces and should have come from the factory on all '69s and other years as well. I haven't studied the other years so can't speak for sure which years. The metal floor pans and plastic toe boards only serve to protect the insulation from debris.

Original N14 cars had long pieces of foil covered insulation between the body and the top of the frame rail, which hung down an inch or so on the outside of the rail. Most of mine is still there, you just can't see it. One would have to lift the body off the frame in order to install, so it is somewhat difficult to fake...or in my case, replace.

Hi Gene,
I misunderstood.
I thought you said your car had no shields at all. I'd expect it to be as you've described....2 upper shields, but no sign of the 2 lower shields.

Alan

Hi sad,
The info I'm looking at says just that it appears 'some early', 70 model,454 equipped, cars had the lower shields. It goes on to say 'several thousand' cars. I don't even know if that means the 454 cars that were among the first several thousand cars built, or the first several thousand 454 cars built.
More than a bit uncertain!?!
Regards,
Alan

Well, there were only about 4400 454 cars in 1970, so it probably meant the 454's of all the thousands of 'Vette's manufactured in early '70. Would be nice to see who has an original 454 from before Feb 19, 1970 to see if they have the shields.

Thanks for responding.

Simon.
