Hi mlc,
The valve covers need to off the heads to see the date castings.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Default Casing date

On most BB aluminum heads the date is cast on the bottom of the intake port.

Hi

That is what I thought too.

The cast heads have it under the valve cover, but the alus have it unvisible as long as the intake is installed.

Hence unvisible for NCRS judging.

It might be possible to see it with a Bore a Scope. They are used in the Large Diesel Engine world do look into Cylinders with out removing the Heads. One might be able to remove an Intack Bolt and go down threw its Hole, if not for sure down the Distributor Hole. As said above, the NCRS can't see it so it must be right.

I have the same heads on my BB and the date code is stamped to the left of the third intake valve spring (on pass side) - third intake runner. (Second intake runner if on driver side) Dates are stamped vertically. They are identical out of the box.
Simply remove the valve covers. The date codes are both stamped in this area. The part number is right above them slightly to the right and displayed horizontally.

The original L89 heads are not this number. The ones you have are Chevrolet Factory replacements #3919842 - aluminum closed chamber rectangular port heads.
