Driver side mirror nuts were very hard to remove. I was trying to change the gasket and mounting hardware which turned into a mistake. One of the screws had to be convinced to break loose and about half way out, whatever it attached to on the backside from the factory, broke loose. cant remove bolt because the fiberglass hole is ok, just screw spinning with something on the backside. I removed door panel and found another wonderful design theory - no access to the backside of the mirror area, as it is encased in the door skin and I dont want to dremel a view square to possible get a plier hold on it....any input is appreciated
Hi R71,
Since you have the trim panel off can you loosen the bottom 'stops' in the window tracks so the glass goes ALL the way down...and then you MAY have access through the slot?
Regards,
Alan
the top of the skin looks "encased" even if I drop the glass....meaning it doesnt seem to allow for access to the backside....I larned on another thread the bonded nut plate is what came loose....I can cut the screw but would have the nut plate rattling around the area I cant access and doesnt seem to haev any access other than an access hole about 4 inches away.
R71, I recall when I installed my right side mirror ( did not come stock from the factory ) I went down a little just below the brace and installed my own backing plate for the mirror screws to hold onto. So here is what I would do , as my car is a driver and not a show car , remove your mirror gasket and see if you were to lower the mounting screws down to below the set of screws you have now, if you can do as I did and make a backing plate below the area that the screws are in now and plug the outside skin holes with JB weld . But before you do any drilling check to see if the mirror gasket will cover your old screws holes , the only other way is to take the window out and cut out the metal blocking your access to the screws and reweld the patch back in or leave it out. Good luck
appreciate that trick....maybe I just use some plastic/fiberglass epoxy and dress up the screw and push it in and let it set in place....the other screw holds tight. Worst case is I epoxy the bracket to the car and fix the entire thing when its stripped for next paint job dow the road....
