Hi
My amp gauge of my 68 is steady, not showing any differences.
How does this sytem work. There must be a bridge somewhere as the wires to the gauge are rather thin.
Any ideas ?
Thanks Gunther :seeya
First off, these meters do't vary a hell of a lot if the system is normal...
the meter is in series with the sense input wire going to the regulator....
assuming your alternator is an internal regulator type....'69...I can't recall....I allways update to later hi amp alternators anyway....;-)))
so the meter is in series with that sense wire....and does not require heavy gauge for actual current...
Any hot wire under your dash will read the voltage that your alternator is charging at.So it is unlickly that the printed circut behind your gadge cluster is falty.Go buy a cheepy volt meter put the black leed - on the block and put the red leed + on the poast on the back of the alt. and it should read fror 13.5v to 14.0 v if not your alt. or voltage regulator are bad but who cares because they should be changed togeather any way .Good luck

On my '76, there is an additional wire going from the starter solenoid to the amp guage. I believe this is also where the battery meets the alternator. The wire has a fusible link by the starter, so make sure it's not burnt out or disconnected. I highly recommend getting a big laminated schematic from 'Lectric Limited, available from Chicago Corvette Supply.
Thanks for all help.
I do have a Corvette chassis wiring diagramm from Lectric Limited, but it doesn'r realy show details. The wires end at bulkhead connectors and from there on they often split up to more units.
Anyway, somebody send me a nice detailed diagramm of this system by E-mail, very good, and this is what I was looking for.
Hopefully, it's one of the fuse links that's blown.
Where are this fuses located ? In the main fuse panel ?
Thanks a lot.
By the way, I do agree, a Voltmeter is verry reliable to check the system.
Is there a voltmeter avail that fits into the amps gauge space, green faced for 68 to 71 ?
Picked apart my ampmeter today.I found that the colik had burned off,sp i soldered it together again and i got it to work again. It doesent move much though.ight after i start the engine it comes down a little to the -40 mark, but climbes slowly back up to 0.What should the gauge read when the car is idleing.Should it stay at 0 or move upwards the 40 marker..?
The fuse links are wire loops. One is located at the horn relay, the other is generally around the wiper motor. They are generally brown wires, 16 gauges or so and butt spliced into the main harness. And I'm the person who sent the diagram.
Hi Andy.
Thanks a lot.
I will try to follow this wiring up one of this days.
I had this gauge dash apart last winter to install the original 68 radio and to fix the clock, but just forgot about the amp gauge. :mad
Now, it will take a while B4 I can go deep into this again, unless it's a easy fix.
Thanks to your wiring sheet, I at least have an idea where to start.
Again, thanks a lot. Gunther
