replacing the reverse switch

Alright, I ordered a new reverse light switch for my 78, and of course the repair manual nor the part itself came with any gouge. If anyone has prior experiance with replacing this switch much appreciated before I rip the console apart.

is this a 4 spd reverse light or the automatic neutral safety switch/reverse light switch?

4 speed reverse

sorry cant help you.....however is it mounted from below? it may not be accessed through the console. it may be coming off a shift linkage as opposed to the actual shifter.

No problem, I wish it was that simple, I just had my transmission overhauled and that was the first thing I looked for, now I need to get into the console. Thanks.

On my '76 it is located on a bracket next to the reverse gear lever on the transmission, with a short piece of linkage running to the gear lever. One wire leads up to a plug, and then to the engine harness. Takes 5 minutes to replace.

switch is on trans with small linkage. work from underneath, much easier.

No need to get into the console. Sounds like the overhaul folks did not reinstall it or did not plug it up well.

Excellent, that helps alot, the mechs working the transmission said thier were no brackets or switch, they are getting the bracket for it sent from oregan overnight, lots of help. Thank you.

Right, it was missing prior to thier tear down, previous owner must of messed with it some how. thanks for the info.

The reverse light activation comes from a small bracket connected to the trans side cover with a small rod that connects to the reverse arm
