Getting ready to replace both the positive and negative cables on my 72 I'm sure everyone has guessed by now having a starting problem, narrowed down to the positive cable.
Has anyone re-routed the positive cable to avoid going through the transmission hull and out to the starter? Want to try and avoid all the heat. If so, where/how did you route the cable? Would like to see pics if possible.
Has anyone used MAD Enterprise Electrical double insulated battery cables? I've read they are used in race cars and do a much better job insulating/protecting the battery cables from heat.
Mine may have been different than yours, but when my 81 quit one day, it was corrosion inside the insulation on the ground cable. Heat had nothing to do with it. I replaced both positive and negetive cables with 2 gauge fine multistran tin coated marine grade battery cable. Excellant flexibility and extreamly high resistance to corrosion. Oh I also ran the Ground cable directly from the battery to engine block bypassing the frame. I have a 6 gauge cable, of the same type, grounding the frame also. Al
Hi 72,
Since the + cable runs behind the trans. tunnel insulation I'm not sure that's the cause of the heat problem. I'd think the cable is more likely to suffer nearer the starter because of the heat from the exhaust manifold and head pipe.
Was your original still run behind the insulation?
