Changing Belts 1971
So to make sure I get the right one, I always cut off the old one, and take it with me when I get the new belt. That way, you are sure to get the correct belt.
Just loosen the adjusting bolt. Loop the belt over the fan, and onto the pulleys. Pull, and tighten the adjusting bolt.
As Sarge and mash have said it's not too big a job.
Depending on your car's options you may have a short belt that only runs between 2 pulleys, the water-pump pulley and the pulley on the harmonic balancer.
If so there's nothing to loosen like the alternator to get the slack needed to get the belt off. I've always had to loosen the fan clutch and then the pulley on the water-pump; tip the pulley enough to get the belt on, and then tighten the pulley bolts back on the water-pump.
The alternator belt is more straight forward to replace.
Good Luck!

Alan
You can just see the sort belt in this picture...it's in the groove closest to the block.

The belt that does NOT have any adjustment needs to be installed as Alan_71 described. Loosen the fan-to-waterpump nuts, loop new belt over the fan and onto the [tilted] pulley, then re-tighten those nuts. If you were provided with the correct belt, that should do the 'trick'.
