WCS, no sir, it still did not start, I wasn't clear on that...
noonie, haha, no, but as I said, I brought the starter in and it bench checked fine. The 'tech' said, 'it spins real strong, the only prob I see is you have an oil leak and maybe that is causing the starter to not operate'.....
They have "Techs" at Autozone? Really? I wouldn't take their word for anything. Most (not all) of those folks are stuck for an answer if you don't have make, model, radio option, year and color of a a vehicle so they can look it up on their computer. "Spins real strong" really? That's how you determine a starters good? Like wcsinx and noonie have said, replace it and be done with it. You've already done the labor a couple of times....
Ha, thats why I put the ' ' around tech.....
When the starter is installed and when I turn the key to on, or start, nothing.
Okay, back to basics. Sounds like the wiring hasn't been ruled out yet. You should have 12V at the battery cable. When you turn the key to "start" you should get 12V at the "S" terminal, then with the key in the "On" position, you should get 12V at the "R" terminal. If you don't have this, you've got wiring issues....

Ok, thanks and I will check that out as soon as I can...thanks.
A 76 should have hei dist and thus the r term on the solenoid is unused.
the only wire to crank is the purple.
A good place to start is to reach down and short the s and bat terminals with a screwdriver and see if the starter cranks.
If it does, chances are high, it's not the starter.
I have to get someone to turn the key over to see if I have v to the 's'...I am not showing it while using my remote start switch, but I am not sure if that thing even works as its very old.
I have the starter removed, but connected right now....when I was cking for v and such I got back up and hit the key and it turned once...it seems to turn every once in a while....so not sure if its the ignition switch or a wire issue.
Could also be your neutral safety switch is flakey or out of adjustment. If it's an automatic, try jiggling the shifter while trying to get it to start.
I went thru same thing. I used a trouble light to check for power to purple wire at starter. Had to replace N/S switch since I have an AT. Then some times when it would not crank after replacing switch. Pulled started and it tested fine. I finally replace the starter with a mini from Summitt; haven't had a problem since. Also, car starts with a touch on the key & $ was about the same as NAPA.
remove and clean all battery connections, especially the negative attached to the frame right under the battery....Could save you some work and money before you tackle removing the starter....you have already had it checked so its not the starter....I could never understand why a customer was willing to crawl under a car and remove a 'hot and dirty starter without first checking 'All the cable connections and cleaning them first...
If I sold it I would make you go and put it back on...The starter is OK
Pete, nobody here to help with the starting...I tested my remote starter, t/u...I found my 12v test light and I went to my 73, now with test clamp on 's', in off, no power, as it should be. I put key to 'on' and I had 12v...then went to start and had 12v still, not sure if the 73 is wired differently than 76?
Went to my prob car, test light on 's'...key 'on', no power, key to start, no power.
That would leave the ignition swtich? I am checking the wires, so far they look good and ohm ok....the ground I removed and cleaned, including the battery one that a poster mentioned.
Well went ahead and re installed the starter and got it all back in order under the car. I started to get the steering wheel dropped down for the ignition switch change....I just have to remove that cable attachment in the engine bay, but its hanging down partially, propped up with something underneath it.
Well for the heck of it I decided to try to start car...now it is starting everytime, or at least 10 times in a row. The first few times I had to turn key sort of hard and such....so I think its either the ignition switch, but it could be the key ignition also, I am thinking.
