Default 76 starter

Ok guys, the 76 had for months a starter issue, it would sometimes just not turn over, then a few cycles of the key and it would crank.

Now it will not turn start at all. Battery is full and new. I tried a remote starter and it didn't start, so I figured it wasn't a switch, but the starter. So i bought a solenoid, and no help. There is 12v coming to starter.

I removed starter again, and tried to start, to see if it would spin, no luck. I tried to remote start with it off, no help.

I can spin the bendix.

Starter fried?

Thanks my friend, as I was lying back on the garage floor looking at it, I was thinking the same thing...I will let them do a bench test.

It could be a bad spot on the armature.
I had a starter years ago where it was always a crap shoot whether the car would start or not. It all depended on where the starter's armature came to rest after the previous start. If it stopped spinning with the brushes in contact with the bad spot the starter would not work.
For a while I could get it to work by banging on the starter with a wrench or something, then eventually not even that worked.

Hey, I am in Maryland. As its for my soon to be ex, I do not mind getting it running properly, but I can buy a new one from Autozone for about 30 to 40 bucks, depending on type. I spent about 30 for the solenoid yesterday, jeez.

Appreciate it though.

If I have 12v to the starter, and the stater is working by bench test, I would think its the ignition switch...?

Read Kevin 73's post again.

What you have described are the classic symptoms of a starter (or generally speaking a brushed electric motor) going bad. The reason it worked at Vatozone is because you jostled the motor around in the process of removing and transporting it, and the brushes made temporary contact. I bet if you had someone turn the key while you smack it with a hammer, it'll crank right up.

in short...

replace the damn starter

Ok I understand...if I turn the key to the on position and readi 12v down to the starter would that indicate the ignition switch is doing its job? I re secured the ground wire too, it looks good.

And the solenoid is working, yes.

No joke, slide under there and tappy tappy on the starter motor housing with a hammer while your wife works the key. I'll bet you it'll crank or at least try to.

When you turn the key to "START" do you have 12 volts to the "S" terminal?

Pete, to the 's'? ...I think I checked that and it did not, I'd have to double check...I did it to the main lug for sure and it showed 12v...the 'r' has nothing going to it.

WCS, I did take a hammer and tap on it while it was removed, but still connected...I tapped on it, then went back and started it as I was by myself.

So the tapping method worked? That pretty much narrows it down then. Replace/rebuild your starter.

WCS, no sir, it still did not start, I wasn't clear on that...

noonie, haha, no, but as I said, I brought the starter in and it bench checked fine. The 'tech' said, 'it spins real strong, the only prob I see is you have an oil leak and maybe that is causing the starter to not operate'.....

They have "Techs" at Autozone? Really? I wouldn't take their word for anything. Most (not all) of those folks are stuck for an answer if you don't have make, model, radio option, year and color of a a vehicle so they can look it up on their computer. "Spins real strong" really? That's how you determine a starters good? Like wcsinx and noonie have said, replace it and be done with it. You've already done the labor a couple of times....
