The Carb on my 1980 Vette has 2 electrical connections, if the system is working, while running and you unplugged one of these connections should you see a difference in how the engine runs?
The electrical connections are going to the fuel metering device in the carb. If you disconnect any wires...or anything in the remainder of the system is missing or malfunctioning...that metering system is operating on its own and doing so very inefficiently. I can't imagine removing any wiring and not having the "Check Engine" light come on to tell you about it......unless the rest of the system is not operational or the CEL bulb is bad. Does it light up initially at start up?
Unfortunately I think the whole electronic, emission, system is dead, but it runs somehow I can drive it fine but the computer stuff is not working so I cant pass smog so im stuck. I can disconnect any plug on carb with no change and no CEL
I presume you have an LG4 car (305 engine)? If so, when the computer or any part of the system fails, it defaults to full rich. It'll run but the fuel economy will be poor andk it probably won't pass emission testing.
Correct. IMO, your best course of action is to get a copy of the Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual (if you don't already have one) and check out the section on that computer controlled system. It has all the diagnotics for checking each component and the total system. You never know; you may have all the parts to a working system and don't even know it. That system is not so bad, if you get it working. Certainly it should pass emissions testing and I'm sure it will improve fuel economy from where it is now.
Not to hijack this but I have some smog stuff along with the Qjet and alum manifold from my LG4 just sitting around on my shelf i would be willing to part with.. Sold car 4 years ago.. I now have a 98C-5 and a 79/L48 4 speed.. Still miss my 80 that I sold just after it was re-born with a GM Crate 350...
