Default 71 tire size?

Car has 225/70/15's on it now. Tires are 15 years old or maybe even older. They are showing a little dry rot and I don't want to take any chances. I want to put some new tires on, but unsure what sizes are ok. I'd like something less balloon looking than whats on it.

It sounds like most people recommend 245/60/15 or 255/60/15. From my searches some people have rubbing issues with the 255's. Has anyone experienced any problems with 245's? Any other reco's?

Your choice...your money, but I think you should stay with the tire size you have now. You know it fits without clearance problems, there is a good selection of available brands, tread patterns, quality and prices.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

235R70 (or R60, if you like a lower profile...as most of us do) x15's will fit the wheelwells of any C3 without rubbing. Not so with larger width; they may...they may not. Also, 235R6015's are nearly the same diameter as the original F7015 tires, so the speedometer (if speedo gear is still original) should be pretty close to actual speed.

Unless you do some road racing, the size choice is purely one of "what will fit" and "what do you like".

Hi Dan,
The 225-70s you have are only 1 size wider than the present day equivalent of the original F-70s; which is a 215-70 tire.
I'd think if you're concerned about the "baloon look" of what you have now, I believe the tire sizes you're considering are even more" baloony".
The original tires had a diameter of about 27", a section width of about 8 1/3", and a tread width of about 6 1/4". You can compare that info with the specs on the tires you're considering.
A tire that's too short will appear to not fill the wheel well properly even if it's very wide in section.
The 255/60 tires I have appear to be almost twice as wide as the originals and are VERY baloony looking.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks guys, I'm going with the 235/60's. I don't want to take a chance of having a problem and having to buy another set.

I'm starting a chevelle project soon, I'll do my risk taking there!
