So my L82 has square ports but the headers have round tubes. Do I use square port or round port gaskets ? Seems to me if I use round port gaskets they will burn off in the corners.
Your right, use the square. Round port gaskets are designed for round port heads. The area of the weld on the header that has been ground down will mesh to the square gaskets and is normally what header manufacturers provide with their headers.
Oh sorry, I was talking about the block side where the manufacturer has ground the opening down level and smooth. You don't need to do any grinding, well you shouldn't unless the headers are used and are warped. Grinding that flange down would more than likely create a leak. The flange on the block side should be approximately 1/8" above the plate that the four tubes are welded to, this is why you need a gasket to make up for any imperfections in the flange.
I have the Hooker super comp headers that came with square port gaskets and they have never leaked. The quality of the gasket will make all the difference in the world. I currently have Fel Pro gaskets for my aluminum heads though the hooker gaskets where still in good shape and probably could have been reused, I decided to replace them.
