Default Heat Questions

Its been awhile since I have posted, but I have a 75 with a 350 automatic. I bought the car in pieces and over several years put it back together and made it road worthy. I have never had any heat, though. The heater core is brand new, but not hooked up to anything. There is a hose that comes out of the water pump and goes into the manifold. Is there a valve or something that is supposed to go inline between the water pump and the heater core, or can I simply just hook the hoses from the w/p to the heater core. I would think that would add considerable heat to the interior?

Also, when I try to run the fan, when the switch is in the far left position (off) the fan runs. When switching from low to medium, the fan continues to run at the same speed. When the fan is switched to high, it shuts off. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I believe there is a valve that is vacuum controled between the core & hot water.
Sounds like you have a bad fan switch

Forgot to add, I replaced the switch (also thinking I had a bad switch), but the problems remains.

Does anyone have an under hood picture that shows the heater control valve?

You need a Heater Shut Off valve, some OPEN with vacuum and some CLOSE with vacuum so check and get the correct one. Or you can put a BALL valve in there.

For the HIGH speed fan you might have a bad 30 amp fuse, if you do it's in line and near the M/C and along the fender.

You dont NEED a valve, i hooked up my heater core without using a valve and everything works fine!
I think the original valve was there so that if you put the AC on it cut the hot water to the core as a way to give you cooler air...
What many people do is add a valve on EACH hose so you can completely cut the water to the core.
This helps in case of core failure so you dont have to find a bypass hose and start screwing around and also helps in summer, you can just bypass the core completely to reduce cabin heat!
I think any heating valve thats half decent will do the job. I bought a couple at a heating hardware shop, havent had time to install them yet...

Mine are like that, only needed a couple inserts to make installing them possible! They are pretty heavy duty and can resist to a lot more heat and pressure than necessary!
