Hood Insulator (Need Or Not)
I see 1969 threw 1979 had insulation on the underside of the hood, Is this needed or just a waste of money on a not an original car??? Thanks Have a great day. Gene

i have never had a problem without one but i did have a custom one made for one car may do it again. on some cars it is more for sound control.

I have talked to two owners here in north Texas that have chrome air cleaner covers... Those covers reflected and concentrated the heat / light and burned the paint, top and underside of the hood ... They now cover the aircleaner at shows ...

Yes Sir; I looked up the insulators in Corvette Central, which shows 69 through 79 as having them. They did not come on an 1982, & I've had no trouble with the paint, the 79 will be further away from the air breather, because of the higher hood clearance. Thanks for all your Responses. Have a wonderful weekend. Gene

Hi km,
I don't believe there was any insulation under the hood on 70-72 St. Louis cars.
Since the insulation in 69 was only on the forward part of the hood it seems the engineers were concerned with the radiator temp (heat) or the drone of the fan (noise).
Regards,
Alan

There are nice crossed flags embroidered "hats" for this purpose.

I, too, had a tattered piece of hood insulation...removed it and had the undersided painted black and added these flames....and that was 4 years ago. I drive it just about everyday and in Louisiana in the summer time, some days are like living in a furnace! Never had any trouble with the hood paint being affected by the engine heat.

Correct. The Feds and some states required a minimum drive-by sound level standard. Open element air cleaners died at the same time and for the same reason. Drive-by sound levels.

Vendors sell hood insulators for all the C3 years. But, 68-72 cars DID NOT have it as built by the factory. If you don't believe it, check your AIM. But, I think they are a pretty good idea. I don't have one, as I want to keep mine 'original'. But, if that were not an 'issue' for me, I would install one immediately.

Suggestion if you are not concerned with having it look like the stock raw glass.

Add Insulation
I have a 1978 L48 Corvette that does not have hood insulation. I have ordered the insulation and pins, since I am missing some. What type of glue/epoxy should I use to attach the pins to the hood? I do not want the glue to melt and drop the insulation on a running engine. TIA, Fred

@vetteguy75 Love the flames! Was the underside of your that smooth? If not, how did you do this? My insulation is a mere rag also, but I don't want to just pait the raw glass.
Also: normal automotive paint, or some type of heat-resistant?
Thanks
