Hello, looking for some suggestions and help. I have a 1975 Corvette Convertible with a Stock L48 engine that has 63000 original miles that I would like to do a full tune-up on. I will replace wires, cap, rotor, electronic pick-up, and plugs. I am not sure if I should use OEM parts or is there a prefered brand, open to all suggestion and recomendations, and if there is anything else that am I missing. Thanks for the help in advance. Bob
some will say all delco or GM parts but Mallory m.s.d accell Davis. are all good and Morison and Taylor there are many excellent aftermarket ignition companies. pick your own poison.
Hi bcp,
The ignition and heat shielding will be a nuisance BUT hang on to it ALL, (if it's there), even if you decide to leave some off when you re-assemble.
The next owner may be very glad you saved it.
Regards,
Alan
There is no need to replace the OEM GM electronics in the dist. Definitely plugs, good wires, and a decent replacement cap. Coil is an option.
A set of springs for the advance weights for more aggressive timing.
Before you do much, check the wear on the advance weight posts and repair or replace dist. Most suffer from lack of attention. Sometimes a good cleanup is just needed.
Filters and some attention to carb will probably be necessary.
Napa Echlin brand is a good choice for the ignition parts, (cap, rotor, etc). Also lubricate the advance weights with white lithium grease and make sure they move freely.
Take a close look at getting the spark plug wires to plugs #1,2,3 and 4 (the front four) before you start. A little frustration can set in with the shields and motor mounts.
