I just opened the box with my new front coil springs, the new springs are 4 in. shorter than the original ones. New are 12" and old are 16", is this correct? The vendor is closed for the weekend and I would like to install them. It's a 68 BB 4 speed no air.
Hi PM,
I've read about this question on the forum before.
I believe it's called 'free' height, maybe?
I think the diameter of the steel is thicker so the spring can be shorter but act the same as the stock spring.
It makes installing the spring much easier.
I've just told you everything I know!
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

I think you'll be ok. I almost crapped when mine showed up like that... I thought they sent me the wrong springs. The spring rate is different allowing the same stock ride height and characteristics from a shorter spring. This also allows us to install without the use of a spring compressor..
If you want exact replacements for a points car though, expect to pay a bit more.. I installed mine last weekend, and they are fine.
I installed big block F-41 front springs and they were shorter than the OEM's. So short in fact, that they were a little loose in the spring pocket of the lower control arm. I shoved a piece of plastic tubing over that end of the spring and it took up the wee bit of slack without increasing the ride height like a donut coil spring spacer would have done.
