My side yokes have too much play in them so Im going to eventualy have to replace them.I read up on this in the manual. It says you can pull the rear end and leave the cover bolted into car by taking the cover bolts out and dropping the third member out of the car.Is this a pain in the butt to do.
I had just gone through this whole process the last two weeks and have come to the conclusion that once you start there is no going back.
I wanted to remove the diff as the left output shaft worn to the point is ate into the diff case. I did consider a quick pull but said to myself, while you are here...
Anyways, I am pleased I went all the way with the removal of the spring, adjustment arms, cut off the shock mounts and sawed out the trailing arms. All has been sand blasted and waiting for the ordered parts to show.
I have built others cars in the past and never skipped anything, they never broke down on a long road trip or seven rounds to victory on a drag strip. It is worth the time and effort. Look for posts regarding the tear out process.
All that's been done.trailing arm bushings, wheel bearings.Im not interested in sawing anything off.just need to pull the rear and install side yokes.it already has new bushings and rear leaf spring by previous owner.I know where your coming from but most off its new.
I am doing this right now..its hard to get to the bolts above the cover..as the crosmember it is bolted to makes things tight..I am doing a whole rebuild now on the 73.. I will see what it takes if I only wanted to do the diff and not everything..I should have it out today..the shop manual says you can so..we'll see!!!
Never thought of doing it that way. Sounds like it would be more work than just dropping the crossmember. I would simply remove the crossmember and differential as an assembly. Its only a couple more bolts, and they are all easy to get at.
Your right it looks easier just to drop the support rearend together.the more I look at this car the more I find.the strut rods in the rear are bent upwards slightly like an arch.what would cause this to happen.Im getting where Im scared to look at it.everytime I do it cost more money.I see they sell adjustable ones .Im I better off with them than the stock ones.
The adjustable ones are wayyy better. The General should have done that in the first place. Your strut rods are probably bent because your yokes are worn. Guys have been known to bend them when they run out of adjustment. If the bushings are toast and the yokes are worn you can imagine what this does to the rear camber. Bending the strut rods is what a hacker does instead of fixing it properly.
The guy put a ton of money in the car.a lot in places that you don't see.If I went that far with it I would have took care of this while I had the shafts out to put in the new joints.
I ordered new yokes ,seals ,clips ,gasket ,additive, adjustable strut rods.till I get it apart that's all I can think of.that was bad enough but got free shipping.that helps.
