I took it out without removing the diff cover.Im wore out.I guess Im just getting old fat and tired.gears look good and wasn't having any problems with the posi.side yokes had too much play.they came right out luckily.worst part was removing everything else to get at it.question can I change out pinion seal without upsetting the pinion depth.one othere thing was the rear end black from the factory.I scraped undercoating off of it for and hour and would like to paint it.I believe the half shafts were gray.Im I correct.UPS just showed up with the new yokes and adjustable strut rods but Im cleaning and painting everything before I change the yoke seals and pos the pinion seals.thanks

You can change the pinion seal without messing up the clearance ..but you will need a new crush sleeve and follow the torque specs when putting the yoke back on..one other thing is you may need a seal saver for the yoke..see if you have a groove in it where the seal will ride..like the harmonic balancer..easy stuff..
Btw..you got lucky this is what I did this weekend ..Dern yoke straps would not release..so I cut them off with a torch..had to do the same thing with the u joints!!

i changed my pinion seal last year, didnt mess with the crush sleeve. i punched match marks on the pinion nut and shaft. replaced the seal, and put the nut back to the match marks. ok so far, no leaks or gear problems. when installing the seal it doesnt go in flush with the housing, there is about an 1/8" gap between it and the housing. and put some sealant on the pinion yoke and splines before installing the nut. good luck
The previous owner changed out all the u joints on the car.he must have taken off the lower shock mounts to because the were clean and came out without any problem.I got luck on that.just don't understand why he didnt change out the yokes.I guess he didn't notice the play or didn't think it was bad enough to change them.now to swaps things out clean and paint and shuv it back in.I may not get all back together this week but I will have knocked a dent in it.Im starting to feel old after today.stuff like this didn't phase me a few years ago.man Im wore out and still have to put it back in.I guess would helped if I had some help but I got it out by myself any way.It dosent leak on the ground. but it had crud on the bottom underneath.I could tell it leaked at one time.I just don't want to put it back in after I clean it up and paint just to start seeing crud forming again.
