Default Steering Knuckle

Just finished rebuilding one side of the front end and noticed the stops on the steering knuckle and the lower control arm don't line up properly. How 'aligned' are they supposed to be? The knuckle's stop is almost 3/8" lower than the one on the control arm. I had replaced the upper and lower ball joints. Ball joint problem? They are Spicer. Say, are u supposed to grease the ball joint studs before torqueing the nuts? This a 72 frame off project...

As long as you have a Zerk fitting on the ball joint, you can grease it anytime you like.

Put your jackstands under the a-arms near the balljoints. Do they line up now?

Couple pics. The greasing questions was whether to grease the stud before putting on the spindle so it may slip further up the stud.
I'll also check the effects of jacking the lower a-arm up.

Grease doesn't go to the tapered joint...only to the ballstud inside of the dust boot. Again, it doesn't matter when you grease it.

Here's a pic of the right side steering stops. They align very well. I did smear a little lube on the studs first on this side, but really don't think that would allow 3/8" more travel on those tappered studs. I guess I'll just start over with new ball joints on the driver's side and see what happens.

Here's a progress pic of the frame off...

Not enough weight to compress the spring... Plus the other side aligned fine.

I would put the wheels on and let the front sit on the ground. In the last pic it looks like the A-arm on the drivers side is hanging down lower than the other side. That may be what your seeing as difference between sides. Im not fully clear at what your worried about on the ball joint position. Your almost where mine was when I bought it 1 1/2 years ago. Looks great keep at it. Put a cuss jar near it and every time you swear throw a quarter in, when your done you will have enough money to pay for another one allready restored. Keep us posted.
