Default Do I Need Rectifier if...

Do I need to use the rectifier once I install a new modernized radio?
Thanks!

what rectifier, do you have a power transistor mounted on an aluminum heat sink behind the passenger side dash?

Yes I suppose that's what it is - was hooked into the orig. Delco radio via approx. 6 wires. I didn't know what it was and googled it and it came up as a rectifier - guess I was wrong?
Anyways I assume I don't need it but wasn't sure so wanted to check on here with someone who might know - what do you think?
Thanks for your help!

That item is called a "convector" and is needed for the original Delco radio only. It is an audio power amplifier (stereo uses two transistors) - Mono radio uses one transistor.

Modern radios have this built in. You don't need it for newer radios.

Actually, I need it (if it is the two transistor version). My '73 Convector is bad.

Yes, it is called a convector but sorry I sold this one on EBay a year ago.

To the OP. No you do not need it with a modern head unit and speakers.

You do not need the convector if you are installing a modern radio head & amp. The convector was the early version of a solid-state [final stage] amplifier. Very crude and very low power (16 watts rms). But, for those who still have the Delco head in their car, that convector is a 'necessary evil'. You can get pretty good buck$ for it on eBay.

Sorry, I don't have any seat belts. I have other extra '73 parts, though. I do need the convector
