I think this is an eye test because Roger could turn the pinion flange and count the number of turns on the side yokes which would give you the ratio and narrow down the possibilities

Your right about checking the ratio but I just hadn't gotten that far yet.
The code could be "OK", which is a 1978 3.08. Beyond that, the next three digits would be the Julian dating, if it's 0(???)73, it would be the 73rd day of the year. "W" is for the Warren, MI assembly plant. The "8" I believe is 1978, with the "E" indicating a Eaton posi unit installed, and the "1" being the plant shift.
Whatever it is, that thing was surely stamped, before GM had a drug testing policy!
