True, the synthetic filters do use a different element. Same element for several of the other high end filters though.

I don't know if the K&N is better at filtering than the other better brands, but I really like that nut on the bottom. It is so much simpler to put a socket on it, torque it to spec per the manual, put a safety wire on it if you want to, and forget it.

If I can't get a K&N (sometimes they're hard to find) I use the AC Supergard or whatever it's called, in the long size (PF35?).

I've been using the long AC Delco every 2k miles for a couple of years now with no complaints.

I got one of those adapters that lets you use a roll of toilet paper inside a canister. I've found that Cottonelle works best! :p:

well, i went and dug up one of those filter studies...i find it to be very impressive and extensive and also VERY interesting...for those of you that want to check it out, ive included the link here... http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/
here is a quote from there on fram and mobil 1 as well...

Fram
Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. These filters are manufactured by Allied Signal, Inc. Please do not buy these filters. By boycotting it, we may be able to cause some change. I have personally had one if these filters fail and actually cause engine damage due to bits of paper and glue floating around in the engine.

Mobil 1
Like the Champion, this filter is made by Champion Industries. However, it uses a unique end plate and a thicker can that make it the strongest filter available for wide-distribution retail sale. It also does not use the fragile paper media of the Champion filter. I’m happy to say that this filter is NOT a fake. It is definitely a unique design.

It uses a synthetic fiber element that can filter out very small particles and is much stronger than the fragile, Champion paper media. It is rated just under the Purolator Pure One as far as filtering capability, but is still very much above conventional paper filters. It also has a very strong construction to withstand high-pressure spikes during start-up. Given the choice between the Purolator Pure One and the Mobil 1 filters, I would choose the Mobil 1 because of the restriction concerns of the Pure One and that pesky assembly string. However, as with all Mobil 1 products, expect to pay 2 - 3 times as much for this filter.

most studies that i have read say the same thing...the study includes MANY different brands of filters...
hope this is of some help...gary

Anyone have an opinion on the Napa Gold filter? It's made by WIX which I've heard many wonderful things about, but have never used myself. The oil filter study makes some positive comments about the WIX filters, but also points out a drawback or two.

Just wondering if anyone had a preference between Napa Gold (WIX) and ACDelco.

Thanks!

Just an example My dad owned a 1973 chevy 3/4 ton with a 350 and a 3 speed manual he bought it in 75 I think anyway he always used fram filters changed them on a regular basis this truck was used for everything including hauling a camper and a cabin cruiser on family vacations when we lived in Phoenix and lateron a fifthwheel plus the boat this truck had a hard life. We had that truck until 1987 or 88 a few years before he sold it he had to have a new cam and lifters put in ,this engine had more than 225 thousand miles on it the reason I remember is I lerned that is about how far it is to the moon. When they took the intake off to put in the lifters the mecanic told my dad it was the cleanist engine he had ever seen with that many miles no sludge in the lifter vally. thats why I use fram filters and Pensoil.

OOPS!
I retract my statement below:bb I re-read the filtration study I had at home and I had it al screwed up!

Amsoil has the best filter as far as filtration efficency goes
Then Mobil 1
Then Hastings

Wix fram and Napa are pretty far down the list...

I use Hastings, get them from the little place down the street ( Welle on Central Ave for you Minnesota guys )
They are well built filters, and even filter pretty well according to a few studies I've seen.
BUT I may switch to Amsoil, once I see their price, since theirs filters even better...

Oh and Wix fitlers are in the top 5 I think...

I also heard that Hastings makes good filters. Anyone if ther'ye still out there or where to get em?

If you read the oil filter study above, the guy states that Fram used to make very good filters, but have now stooped to a very low level. I don't doubt the old Frams were great, but the design they have since a few years back seems very inferior.

Well, I see a few votes for the PF35L... Good stuff!

Does everyone know what one is?
Here's the description from Scoggin-Dickey...

This GM Performance Synthetic Oil Filter is a heavy-duty spin-on oil filter that can replace any PF-25 or PF-35 filter on 1968-90 Chevrolet V8 engines. It has a 100% synthetic element that is rated at 12 microns. Its synthetic glass filter media provides finer filtration than conventional cellulose (paper) filters. The individual strands of synthetic glass used in the PF35L are smaller and more consistent in size than cellulose fibers. These glass fibers are supported by a polyester sheet laminated on both sides, and the pleated synthetic filter element is backed by a metal screen. This extremely efficient filter can reduce engine wear by 75% compared to conventional filters without restricting the flow of oil.

Technical Note: PF35L filters can be used in many competition oil systems with remote-mounted filters.

I actually use the small fram filter and change my filter every time I change my oil...I figure the smaller filter allows the oil to flow faster. But, I also change my oil when it looks dirty, even if it's just been a month since the last change, so I don't run any risk of the filter clogging up.

AC/Delco gets my vote, stay away from Fram, cheap made and filtering weak or so the test I have read have concluded.
