Default Which Gas Tank?

I have a 68 that decided to drain its own gas while it was up on the rack getting new exhaust. Thankfully they didn't have a torch lit at the time.

So I dropped the original tank... it has the vapor return line, but it isn't hooked to anything up front.

Should I replace the tank with the original type and plug the vapor return line or should I get a tank that doesn't have it at all?

Where was the leak? At the tank or up at the fuel pump area where the vapor line ends.

My 68 originally had a 390-427 so it had the vapor line. Now has a 435-427 so the vapor line is capped and clamped.

Rochester Q-jet cars had the vapor line, Holley equipped cars did not have the vapor line.

Default Vapor return line.

My $.02 would be to replace it with a correct one with the vapor return line otherwise you'll still have the return line plumbed down the frame rail dead ended on both ends serving absolutely no purpose.
It may not be hooked up to anything now but maybe you or someone else might use it in the future as a fuel return for a fuel injection system or to put it back to the factory configuration.

It was leaking from the bottom of the tank. There are at least two pin holes rusted through at the lowest spots.

I was leaning this way, but another piece of info... the end of the return line broke off while removing the tank. It would probably need to be replaced if it was ever needed again.

Probably best to stick with the original either way.

Since the return doesn't carry pressure a rubber line over to whats left of the steel line should be fine.
If your not judging the car you could buy a 3 port pump and take advantage of the return fuel, especially if your in a hot area.

I understand that it is to prevent Vapor Lock, but what symptoms would I be looking for? I don't think I have ever experienced vapor lock, but if it is just reduced power, I may have just missed it.
