Ok I got my air cleaner assembly that I bought from a guy on ebay today.
This setup does not seem to be correct. But I cannot find a picture to figure this out.
Here is the basic problem. The top (cover) of the air cleaner assembly fits right on top of the base. Even though I dont have the hood seal yet, or expect my the whole cowl induction thing to work correctly I cannot figure out how this would work. I need someone to verify this for me to make sense. Should the air cleaner itself be so tall as to create an open type air cleaner. If so then the case is that i dont have the right air cleaner. Could someone tell me which actual air cleaner it should be, as well as what the height of the air cleaner is? Secondly, I cannot see how the PCV, breather thing really works if the tall air cleaner creates an open air cleaner. In theory there would still be a chance for vapors to be let in or out into the open, through the cowl. This is the whole reason i bought the correct air cleaner, it is required for emissions in WI. I want it set up correctly regardless, but if this works the way I am thinking this is a silly setup emissions wise!
From the top down pictures everyone has of their engines, it is almost impossible to see what is supposed to be going on with the air cleaner, especially with the big rubber seal around the who thing. There I feel better now. :smash:
Let me clarify...should the air cleaner element itself be so tall as to keep the lid seperated from the base of the air cleaner OR should the air cleaner element fit inside the base with the lid on. If the element is to seperate the base and lid I think this makes sense.
This is for a 75 and from a post from today but it might clear it up for you. The cowl induction air cleaner does look like an open element style and the big rubber seal seals to the hood when closed. That is a nasty looking engine but the air cleaner is correct for a '75. I think the '73's are the same or very close to the same. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=287078

FERL, you have mail!
Certainly not meant as a slam, but when I looked up the 1450 specs, its a 12" outside diameter, how does that work with the 11" lid?
I should have mentioned before, my lid and base are coming out to 14" diameter, if this sheds any light.
Here is what would help, a pic of the air cleaner with the rubber seal removed. Then I can stop anoying the crap out of you guys.
Tony, The E-1450 ilter is 2-1/2" tall with a 12" diameter. Yes, the Xstream lid is only 11" but it works. I can take a few shots in the daytime of the filter housing but my digital camera is cheezy. The correct lid should be like 12-1/4" in diameter. The rubber seal is attached to the upper ring so removing the seal without the upper ring is not possible. Let me know if I can help out any more. I can photo the components over the weekend and get an email to you.
Bad butt Vette, Ferl! I was just about to leave the forum when I noticed you live in Troy, IL. I live in Troy, IL too! Country Village to be exact. I have yet to see your Vette but that's probably due to traveling to Edwardsville only and hitting the highway right from my house. Nice to see someone else from Troy, IL! Maybe you could be my Vette Mentor! I sure would like to know all there is to know about Vettes. I have a flame red '79.
