At some point I will have my bumpers ready to paint. The paint can lists both a DBU88 (Urethane) or DBU66 (Acrylic) for a clear coat. It says they both have different properties and I must select the best one for the job. How are these different? Is one harder, or more flexible? Does anyone know where to get these differences online?
What system are you using? I'm using PPG's DEL system DELSTAR polyurethane Arcylic Enamel and DELCLEAR Arcylic Urethane Clear.
I'm using the Deltron Universal Basecoat (DBU), the recommended primer is DP40/401. The auto body equipment store recommended 2021 Urethane Clear, and come to find out the clear coats I mentioned have been discontinued. I think I'll go with the store's recommendation cause they know what sells, and they sell 2021 by the gallon to paint shops so it can't be too bad.
Rockn-Roll- I used PPG Durethane(color) polyurethane paint with DAU 82 clear coat. You saw my shark. Looks pretty good. Durethane has been discontinued and replaced with Durethane 2. The DAU 82 works great but it might have been discontinued as well. Becareful shooting this paint. It can really f_ _ k up your lungs. You should use a positive air breathing respirator.

Thanks Dan. Yeah, DBU is about the same stuff from another company...Urethane instead of Polyurethane but just as bad...I'll need to have some hefty ventilation when I shoot it. I actually have enough color to shoot my bumpers, so I'll just be buying the primer and clear.

Re: Which clearcoat should I use? (Rockn-Roll)

The 2021 is a great choice in clearcoat for your DBU base. Any of the DBU bases will work just fine on your flexible substrate - the basecoats are naturally quite flexible, and work very well on plastic/rubber parts with no flex additive or other specfial additives. The 2021 can be shot right over the top of the DBU, and will hold up pretty good on the semi-rigid plastic bumpers. If you want to add an extra measure of elasticity to the clear, you can add the flex additive to the 2021. This will delay the inevevitable cracking, but will not completely eliminate/prevent it. It also has the drawback that the parts that have had the flex additive mixed in the clear do not colorsand and rub out as clean as the other parts. For this reason, I recommend that parts with flex in them not be colorsanded or rubbed at all. I've actually had very good luck not adding the flex, and just shooting the parts just like the rest of the car - the 2021 flexes enough that it holds up quite well.
Thanks for the support lars! I feel more confident now.
74-Roadster: I just got through fine sanding the front bumper, and I think the back bumper has enough Evercoat body filler built up to match the body...but it got dark before I got a chance to fine sand and inspect for pits. If tomorrow is a good day I'm going to fine sand the back bumper and pick up the paint materials. How did your spraying work out today? Is DPLF is a sandable epoxy? Just as soon as I learn something about paints I encounter something that I don't know.
