Default Water Temp Sending unit.

How exactly do you hook up a water temp sending unit? I have the unit plugged into the side of the block, I also have the gauge in place. What do I use to run between the two? Also what is danger hot once this gauge is working? Im running a 69-350 4 spd, if that helps any. I figure its pretty basic, I just cant figure it out.

Thanks

A wire, 16 gauge is a good size, should go between the sending unit and the sender terminal on the gauge.

How does the wire attach to the sending unit? Also what type of wire should I use? Just a solid copper wire or like electrical wire?

Is it an original style sender? If so, you should be able to attach the wire with a spade terminal. Stranded copper wire is better for automotive use.

Not sure if it is the original sending unit, the gauge is original.

this is a link to one that looks exactly like the one I am using. If that even worked.

Also, so just use normal electrical wire?

If your original wire is there, should be dark green on the driver side near the alternator, it should slide on from the side of the sender.

The original is not there. The wires going to the gauge are yellow black and grey. I'm doing a rat rod type wiring. I dont have the engine harness. So I need to hook a direct line to the gauge. Any ideas

Hi p03,
You also asked about at what point hot temperatures become a danger.
The 71 owner's manual indicates "210 degrees for normal operating temperature".
"During hard driving, heavy traffic stop and go, and prolonged idling in hot weather the temperature may rise to 230 degrees".
"Whenever the gauge reaches 250 degrees , stop engine and determine cause of over heating or reduce speed to allow engine to cool".
I'd think the range would be about the same for your 69.
My 71, no a/c, sb, runs around 190 degrees at idle, with an aluminium radiator, rebuilt water pump, fan shroud, and all seals.
Regards,
Alan
