I was about to change the valve covers and stock airbox to a chrome air cleaner and chrome valve covers but i don't know what to do with the heater hose going from the exhaust manifold on the driver side to the under side of the air box and i don't know what to do about the small hoses going from the back of the carb to the underside of the air box.. anyone know what i have to do???????
Re: NEED HELP QUICK... AIRBOX CHANGE (Justin79-L-82)
Justin, That is the heater inlet hose that gose from the manifold to the air cleaner, It's for emissions control. You can simply remove it and ignore it or you can use a 5/16 socket to remove the heater hose box itself that is mounted around the manifold. Either way you can disregard it.
Re: NEED HELP QUICK... AIRBOX CHANGE (Justin79-L-82)
I believe that's a vacuum for operating the hot air intake when cold. Just get a vacuum plug from your local autoparts store and plug the port on the carb. You can also remove the little aluminum heat duct that goes up to the air cleaner assembly.
AAAAHHHHHH!!! i just broke a bolt when putting on my valve covers.. almost couldn't get it out of the head.... now i have to wait until tomorrow when i can get some new bolts... while i'm there is it worth getting valve cover clamps to spread out the pressure or is it o.k. to just use the four bolts by themselves?
Re: NEED HELP QUICK... AIRBOX CHANGE (Justin79-L-82)
with only four bolts holding down the valve covers...
the spacers help prevent leaks.
the vac caps from auto store are good advice...as well as the removal of the emission crap, as long as you don't have to pass any every year/other year.
whats all involved in removing the emissions crap???? how how do you do it. The only thing i can think of is the egr valve which goes to the water neck if i'm not mistaken?! If you remove that i'm guessing you need a new water neck :conehead
Re: NEED HELP QUICK... AIRBOX CHANGE (Justin79-L-82)
Emissions crap:
A.I.R. pump, EGR valve, catalytic converter. Also, if you eliminate the heat riser, you can get a regular thermostat housing that doesn't have the temp controlled vac. valve on it. If you eliminate EGR, you need a different intake manifold or some way to cover the spot where you removed the EGR valve.
If you don't get emissions tested, then this stuff is almost useless anyway. Pretty much just added weight. All depends on how you look at it, I guess. Some would say that you're harming the environment and that stuff is there for a reason. Personally, I don't think my 79 needs it, hence it's removal. :D If you get a new intake, Edelbrock's Performer Air Gap is a good one to use for stock setup. Performer RPM will take some ingenuity for the proper size air filter to fit and you will need a new carb if you install the Performer RPM Air Gap. I have the RPM, but now realize that I don't need it. The Performer Air Gap would have been just fine, but I wasn't thinking clearly at the time. Had the mindset that "bigger is better" without knowing the full use of each intake and my setup. Oh well, enough rambling.
SOunds good, but i already got my weiand dual plane action plus manifold. does that have a place for an egr valve? ANd what is the a.i.r pump, what does it do and how do you remove it? :chevy
