Does anybody know if I can get 69 side exhuast to fit a 77. Do I need to go back to manifolds or can I use headers. I love the chrome plated aluminum covers from the 69, But im not sure I want to spend that much money. Im trying to get away from the chrome Hooker side exhaust. It looks Great. but the chrome doesnt last, they are way to hot, and way to loud. They where Great when I was 19. I must be getting Old! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank Eric
The 69 side exhaust bolts directly to the ram horn exhaust manifolds. Corvette Central sells fiberglass side covers that can be painted to resemble the originals. ***HOWEVER, I have never seen fiberglass covers that look as nice and shiny as the chrome 69's!**** Also, you will need to watch out for your local government..... EMISSIONS AND SIDEPIPES ON A '77 DON'T MIXED WELL!
Sidepipes are cool, but I would not recommend for long hauls or daily drivers. I KNOW I'M GOOD HERE THE CRITICS ON THAT ONE. Seriously, they are loud, stink when sitting at lights and for a 1977.. are down right illegal. The car will not pass the visual inspection without cats. You may sweak by on the sniffer test... but would be VERY easy to see AND Hear the cats are GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE! Good luck! :D
I have sidepipes on mine and if anything they are not loud enough. I can easily have a conversation with the passanger with the windows down and cruising at 65. The only time I get a smell at stoplights is when the motor is not tuned right otherwise it is not noticable. There are no emission tests in Green Bay so that is not a problem. The chrome covers are really nice but really expensive also. The painted covers can be made to look pretty good. Just look at binnie77's car.

Re: Side Exhaust ?? (Pete79L82)
I want side pipes on my 73. I am leaning to the chrome hookers. Maybe with some block hugger headers and some creative welding you can make a sidepipe set with cats. get some high flow cats and make your own headers. May not work as good but it'll be cool lookin
After looking at Binnie77 , I ordered a set from Gary Gruhala, best price around, I believe and very helpful in answeing your questions. Hope to put them on this next weekend.
I have chromed fiberglass covers on mine...that look as close as possible to the originals...and superior to any painted ones I've seen. But its still about $850 for the covers and chroming. A lot but better than $2K for the real ones. I've had them on for about 4 weeks now...and so far so good.
