Default tick,tick and faster tick

Hello all,
I have a 1980 corvette, apon accelerating I hear a tick sound.

I have looked at the motor and reved it up and hear no tick. I am thinking

exhaust problems, maybe a leak ?

the car runs strong just embarassing to be heard.

Any ideas
Thanks ROB

Have a helper smother the end of your tailpipe with a rag to substantially increase back pressure. A leak will manifest itself to a greater degree and be easier to hear.

Drive out on a street with very little traffic; at about 20 mph, put the car in 'neutral' and take foot off the accelerator: Did the ticking stay the same? If so, it doesn't have anything to do with the engine...the noise is associated with wheel speed. And 'wheel speed' is directly related to the driveshaft and back....also including the wheels.

I suspect that the noise is coming from a wheel...likely from a wheel cover (if you have them). If not, it could be brake related or E-brake related.

Besides exhaust, other things will cause a ticking sound.

Depending on where it's coming from, it could be a speedometer cable that's binding, a rear wheel bearing going bad, or a something broken in the emergency brakes, such as a spring.

Don't rule out the fuel pump. I have had two that sounded just like a bad lifter. Can you pinpoint which side it's coming from?

Mine came from my Power Steering Pulley that had a fatique crack in it...I could move it axially at the belt by hand.
Very scary if it had failed completely

Again...ALL engine related items (including accessories) will turn proportionally with engine speed. The above listed test will exclude them all, if the offending sound stays the same when going to 'neutral' and releasing the accel pedal.

P.S. He's apparently NOT hearing it with engine idling. That's a big clue that it's not likely to be engine related.
