Hot spots, indicated by a blue appearance, fine cracks, chewed up ring gear, general appearance for wear and the likes. I was able to buy a replacement clutch and they machined the flywall in the deal. $210.00 bucks later I got it covered.

If the surface where the clutch disc rides is not heat checked or gouged from excessive wear, it can likely be reused. If your clutch was slipping, that surface may be glazed; if so, you can use some medium grade sandpaper to rough it up a bit and clean off the surface so the new disc can 'grab' onto the steel surface.

If none of the starter teeth are missing, then just have the clutch surface machined. Most auto parts store will send it to an automotive machine shop. I had mine resurfaced a couple weeks ago for $35. That sure beats the cost of a new flywheel.
