I think my fuel pump might need a little work.
I have been making slight adjustments to my Q-Jet & getting a little better response.
When I am at WOT in 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd, the engine pulls strong & smoothly.
In 4th, the engine doesn’t want to pull smoothly, almost feels like its missing. As the revs get higher its starts to smooth out.
In 5th gear I cant get it to go past 100 mph. Feels like its missing again. & not enough torque to get the revs up.
Could I be draining the bowl because the pump isn’t keeping up?
Sounds like fuel starvation. Float level too low (top of float should be about 5/16" below the upper edge of the float bowl, when you depress the float pivot pin downward and gently seat the needle by pushing the float end down); kink in rubber hose at fuel pump; damaged/pinched fuel line (rubber or metal); fuel filter clogged (internal carb filter or in-line filter); clogged strainer sock at fuel tank outlet.
Less likely to be ignition, air inlet restriction, or valve train related as the engine revs up fine in lower gear ranges.

On a Q-Jet, the internal fuel filter is the first check, as that one often never gets changed as many folks don't even know it's there...
