i need some new tires, the previous owner put 235/70/15 on and they rub, so my question is should i get the stadard 225/70/15 or the 255/60/15? and the same size in the front and rear?
The 225/70's should definitely offer no clearance problems and would therefore be safe. However the 255/60's were offered as optional on the '79 Corvette. With stock wheels (stock off-set's) the 255/60 should fit as well with no problems.
A 235/70-15 is a taller tire than a 225/70 by about 3/4" and could be the reason they were rubbing. The 255/60-15 is actually slightly shorter than even the 225/70.
I run 255/60-15's all the way around on my stock '73 with only minor rubbing on the left front frame rail (actually on the head of the carriage bolt that holds the steering box on the frame) at full lock. It keeps the head of the bolt smooth and shiny.
thanks for the input guys appriciate it. i am useing stock rims and i was wanting the wider tires for the looks , just was worried bout wrecking new tires like the ones on there now
the worst is the front tires but it does look like the back do rub a bit, but i know what your saying , i could just replace the front for now
Yes, the front was expected so you could get 225/70/15 for the front so the diameters are close. Then later get 255/60/15 for back. Check carefully for if/where they are rubbing in back. The spring can easily be adj. to raise rear.
