Default 1981 Computer

I think my computer is dead. I cannot get a check engine light at all. Installed new bulb with nothing. No clicking under the hood when I try to check codes. Car starts fine and runs but acts like a pig. I have correct carb and O2 sensor. No Air pump or EGR and I have headers. Is there something else I need to check first before buying a new computer? thanks for your help!

Disconnect the CCC and ground the Brown/White wire with the key on. It should turn the light on, if it does you have a bad computer. If not, its somewhere in the dash

I have two computers I picked up with harness from a forum member a while back from 81. I am now planning to install TPI so would be gald to sell one for $50 plus shipping. Would be happy to ship both to be sure you get one that works if you'll ship one back after you're up and running. One has remaufacture sticker and one looks to be all orginal.
PM me if interested.

Thanks but I already ordered one. I still don't know if my prom is good. Do the computers have the chip? If so and mine is bad, I'll need another and they are hard to find.

The computers do have a chip, but not an MCAL like the ones that followed. I have no idea if replacement computers have the chip, but would expect they do.

Hey, I have an 81 also. I was wondering what type of headers you have? I didn't know that after market headers were O2 sensor friendly. Are yours the low profile type? Thanks

You can buy headers with the O2 bung already on them or just have one welded on any set you want. I purchased a reman computer for my 81 from Autozone a couple of years ago and it did not come with a chip..Tim

The replacement computers do not come with chips. You can usually find those and the usual suspect vette parts houses though.

My chip was fine. Everything works great now. It had headers on it when I bought it but the o2 was not hooked up. I had someone weld a bung in for me. It is true that you can get these headers with the o2 bung already there. I am thinking of getting a new set of headers as these are quite old and leaking.
