Hello,
my 68 visors don't stay put after 43 years.
Imagine that.
Anybody found a fix that works shy of tellin me to replace them.
I tried a make shift shim but that didn't work.
I worked at a GM dealer in the early 80's and I remember
GM offered a spring steel collar that you placed over the visor
shaft and slid same inside the tired visor and this cured the problem.
I haven't seen them offered and have not seen the fix in any of the catalogs from the vendors.
The orig. visors are in nice shape externally and I was even able to disassemble the tension nut and screws. The metal tube inside the visor seems shot.
Thanks,
Marshal
I battled with my driver's visor for a number of years.
The trick is to get sufficient grip onto the support shafts without stripping the heads off the bolt/nut combo that tightens onto the shaft.
If there is insufficient grip you can try using a thin aluminium shim inserted into the visor shaft receptacles.... amazing what a coke can be morphed into
You could also score the shaft using a pair of side cutters... This has the effect of increasing the diameter of the shaft on either side of the grooves scored into the metal. Do this only on the section of the shaft that is completely inserted into the visor.
If that doesn't do it, you need to consider new hardware.
Even with new hardware, I still needed to shim the visor receptacles.
You could try crimping the visors a tad. There's a metal sleeve under the vinyl which the rods insert into. You can also use the barrel nuts and screws to tighten them, but they can only do so much.

I cut four small pieces of clear tubing, (I don't remember the ID, but it was just large enough to slide onto the prongs of the visor mounts). I aligned the pieces of tubing so that they were inside the "clamp" area and would not be visible when the visors were installed, then hit them just a touch with the heat gun so they'd be snug on the prongs. When I re-assembled, I didn't have to tighten the screws very tight, and the visors have worked perfectly for 3 years now...

Reason: spelling
Just pull them off and give them a little pop with a rubber mallet. Do not hit them too hard, a little trial and error for this job. Do this and they will stay put.
Ok Phil,
Thanks, I'll start with a hammer.
It is amazing how many of lifes problems can be solved with a hammer
I realize they need to be pinched in order to work again.
If they don't grab I'll go with the hose method offered up in an earlier post.
Thank you every one.
Marshal
Well I used the PhilZell method
No droopy visors.
Also replaced the chrome trim rings around the tension screws as
these were all mushroomed out.
The trick worked
Thanks,
Marshal
