Tach
74 C3 454 automatic. Drove in a 2-mile parade yesterday. Near the end, the tach needle became erratic - jumping around between 0 and 1500 while the car was rolling at normal idle speed (behind the marching band!!). Then it went to 0, and no longer worked. Car set for several hours, and when restarted, the tach worked like a charm for the entire ride home.

When that happened to me, it was the driven gear stripping the teeth off itself. easy fix, but you'll need to pull the distributor. May be the cable as well, but you can disconnect that from the distributor and spin it easy enough.
