Default Engine miss and other problems help

My car has a miss at WOT that starts at 3500 rpm till you shift. I have drove it a couple of times cold and it didn't happen. Also when it heats up it will drop from 1200 idle down to 400 and die if you dont baby it. It is also very hard to start back as if its flooded. I do have headers with no coating or tape the engine bay gets very hot I'm wondering if I have a problem with the fuel getting hot. I was going to get header tape or coating anyway because it heats the inside of the car up. Could I be on the right track.

Assuming you have a stock Quadrajet and distributor, have you checked the condition of the points? have you checked the dwell? have you checked the timing? have you checked for a vacuum leak from hoses or the carburetor base? have you pulled the plugs to see if a cylinder is not firing, etc.

I did check the timing but not the dwell. I advanced it a little made a run then retarded a little made a run neither helped. Car has about 1000 miles since I replaced the points and they still look good visually. Took my rebuilt quad off and put a rebuilt edelbrock from another car, both have ran well in the past, neither helped. Put new springs on the advance weights didn't help. All these problems just started out of the blue when it is warm and you move from Park to Drive the rpm drops from 1200 down to 400 or less and dies. When you try to restart you have to keep turning over with no gas and after about 15 seconds it will start and run like its flooded till you can get it to rev. I'll do a plug check I haven't done that.

Why havent you checked the dwell on the points? You cannt get a correct timing setting unless you adjust the dwell first because it changes the timing. In addition check for a vacuum leak and try to isolate a misfire to one cylinder.

x2 on the points/dwell. A common mistake on the installation of points is failure to properly lube the cam and rubbing block. In a 1000 miles the block will wear down to the point that the contacts are barely opening yet the contacts themselves will look like new.

On a points type ignition, diagnosis always starts with points.

Replace the condenser (in the distributor). If that doesn't fix your problem, it is most likely due to a bad coil.

Know absolutley nothing about dwell don't think I have a dwell meter. It sounds like I need to learn,I'll start educating myself and see where that takes me.

Ok checked dwell timing vacuum leaks all is good. One thing I didn't mention is the thing bangs into gear very hard when you shift from park to R or D. Cam .450/.450 2400 rpm stall B&M shift kit adjustable modulator on 400 turbo. I attributed it going into gear hard to the shift kit but could I have a problem there. Someone told me may be a lockup problem.
