Just bought a 71 with the passenger window not working and in the down position. Determined switch was ok and getting power to the motor. There is a click when you release the switch in either direction, similar to a bad solenoid on a starter. The former owner replaced the motor a couple of years ago - is that the likely cause again?
Should have been more detailed. Pulled the door panel, disconnected the motor, then checked for voltage when the switch was depressed. It showed voltage when the switch was pushed to both the raise and lower positions. Hooked the motor back up and heard a click when letting go of the switch - nothing while holding the switch in either direction. Window never tried to move at all, just made the click when the switch was released.
Make shure that you have a good ground at the motor. I would run a temporary ground right to the motor. If that dosent work I would try a hot wire to the pos. terminal at the motor.
Most likely one of the chinese replacement motors. I had the exact same experience. Brand new motor worked at first. Suddenly stopped working. Took it apart, reassembled (didn't really do anything) and it started working again. It's been 6 months and it's still working. Go figure?
